NYC noise ordinance motorcycle confiscation bill
The Council for NYC, meeting in Manhattan, is currently engaged in drafting a noise ordinance for motorcycles. Called Int-416a, the bill is specifically focused on bikes with straight pipes (http://webdocs.nyccouncil.info/attachments/86212.htm#_ftn6). The bill was originally going to be voted on in mid December with very little public input. Thanks to the efforts of concerned local bikers and ABATE members, the council granted an open meeting. Motorcyclists expressed strong concerns to the council about the bill being discriminatory and of having the potential for abuse by those who would enforce it. Particularly disturbing was the provision that a parked bike could be confiscated on a first offense if the mufflers were deermed illegal. |

What bikers need is a unifying issue
Care-less, distracted, impaired and negligent cagers draw no distinctions among our riding tribes ... we are all equally likely to be the right-of-way violation casualty of a cellphone-distracted soccer mom ...who can barely see over the steering wheel of her oversized gas-guzzling SUV ... weaving across six lanes of traffic as she catches up on her favorite soaps with sister Sally and screams at the kids in the back. This is an issue that should concern even the most oblivious ATGATTers. It is time for American motorcyclists to make a united stand to vanquish those who maim and kill us by violating our right-of-way. It is time we look beyond what the American Motorcyclist Association calls "Justice for All": |

Why should I care?
In North Carolina a new helmet law went into effect on Jan 1 that outlaws novelty helmets and requires riders to wear those heavy and bulky DOT approved helmets regardless of the drivers experience or driving record. Why should I care? North Carolina is far away and this law will not affect me.
Australia recently tightened their helmet laws so that if you are caught riding without a helmet, you get 6 points on your driving record despite the fact that it is simply an equipment violation, and not a moving violation. Why should I care? Australia is far away.
Florida has recently introduced a new bill that would confiscate your motorcycle, has mandatory jail time, and the loss of your driver’s for 10 years for popping a wheelie. |
