Legislative Update:
New Jersey US Senator Frank
Lautenberg will be chairman of the of the transportation subcommittee when the
new congress convenes in January 2007.
Lautenberg will be in a powerful
position to deal with many transportation safety issues.
He has always pushed for mandatory helmet laws. ABATE of the Garden State,
along with the MRF and AMA met with his staff on October 5, 2007 to discuss Lautenberg’s
position on this issue. We also made our
point that we support freedom of choice for helmet issues. We strongly
suggested we put this issue aside and focus on motorcycle safety issues and
awareness campaigns.
We will be contacting Lautenberg’s
office to congratulate him on his appointment and to discuss working together on motorcycle safety
issues.
This will be an important election year in New Jersey. November
2007 we will be voting on a complete new assembly and state senators. Your
legislator committee has already met with Senator Madden and Sweeny staff to
promote our “Ten Points”. We need help and support from all concerned
motorcyclist to promote our cause.
